In a move which many British city-dwellers will cheer, a council has forced a developer to rebuild a much-loved local pub ‘brick by brick’.

The Carlton Tavern was demolished without permission by its owner, foreign developer CLTX – who hoped to build expensive flats on the site.

In a move thought to be unprecedented, the local council has stepped in and ordered the company to rebuild the pub exactly as it was before demolition.

Pub campaigner Roger Protz described the move as a ‘Great precedent for the future of pubs.’

The demolition of a historic pub that survived Hitler’s bombs has been blasted as “another nail in the coffin” for the community – by Danny, who played The Cat. The father-of-two believes the community spirit of Maida Vale, west London, where the pub stood, is being destroyed by the developers that acted in a "calculated" way. Sci-fi legend Danny, 54, said: “The pub looked like it would serve for another 100 years. That pub was so old-school, you would find most of the older community in there. “It’s another nail in the coffin of what we would call in the olden days as socialising. It’s great to be on Twitter but it’s just not the same as real socialising.

The demolition was carried out while the pub was still full of memorabilia – and even had flatscreens on the wall.

The owners, who are based in Tel Aviv, ordered in bulldozers without permission and reduced the Carlton Tavern building to rubble – having told pub staff to stay at home for a stock take.

Now council chiefs are to issue an enforcement notice to CLTX lt requiring to ‘recreate in facsimile the building as it stood immediately prior to its demolition.’

The order is scheduled to be approved next Tuesday – and is thought to be the first of its kind.

Robert Davis, deputy leader of Westminster Council, told the Evening Standard he had been ‘absolutely horrified’.
